Free Tax Return Preparation for Qualifying Taxpayers

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.

In addition to VITA, the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program offers free tax help for all taxpayers, particularly those who are 60 years of age and older, specializing in questions about pensions and retirement-related issues unique to seniors. The IRS-certified volunteers who provide tax counseling are often retired individuals associated with non-profit organizations that receive grants from the IRS.

To ensure you have all the required documents and information our volunteers will need to help you, please bring the following:

  • Proof of identification (photo ID)
  • Social Security cards for you, your spouse and dependents
  • An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) assignment letter may be substituted for you, your spouse and your dependents if you do not have a Social Security number
  • Proof of foreign status, if applying for an ITIN
  • Birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents on the tax return
  • Wage and earning statements (Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R,1099-Misc) from all employers
  • Interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099)
  • All Forms 1095, Health Insurance Statements
  • Health Insurance Exemption Certificate, if received
  • A copy of last year’s federal and state returns, if available
  • Proof of bank account routing and account numbers for direct deposit such as a blank check
  • To file taxes electronically on a married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms
  • Total paid for daycare provider and the daycare provider’s tax identifying number such as their Social Security number or business Employer Identification Number
  • Forms 1095-A, B or C, Affordable Health Care Statements
  • Copies of income transcripts from IRS and state, if applicable

El Programa de Ayuda Voluntaria a los Contribuyentes (VITA, por sus siglas en inglés), ofrece ayuda tributaria gratuita a personas que desean preparar sus propias declaraciones de impuestos y, por lo general, ganan $54,000 o menos, tienen discapacidades, o el inglés es su segundo idioma. Voluntarios certificados por el IRS preparan declaraciones de impuestos básicas, y las presentan electrónicamente sin costo para individuos calificados.

Además del Programa VITA, también existe el Programa de Asesoramiento Tributario para Personas de Edad Avanzada (TCE, por sus siglas en inglés), que ofrece ayuda a todos los contribuyentes, especialmente a personas mayores de 60 años, y especializada en asuntos de pensiones y  jubilación, así como en otros asuntos de interés.  A menudo, los voluntarios certificados por el IRS que ofrecen el asesoramiento tributario son personas jubiladas asociadas a organizaciones sin fines de lucro que reciben asignaciones de fondos del IRS.

Lo que necesita llevar al sitio VITA o TCE:
  • Prueba de identidad (con fotografía)
  • La tarjeta de Seguro Social de usted, de su cónyuge y de sus dependientes
  • La carta en donde se le asigna un número de Identificación Personal del Contribuyente (ITIN), puede utilizarse como sustituto para usted, su cónyuge y sus dependientes si no tiene número de Seguro Social
  • Prueba de estatus de extranjero, si solicitó un ITIN
  • Fecha de nacimiento suya, de su cónyuge y los dependientes que figuran en la declaración de impuestos
  • Comprobantes de salarios e ingresos (Formularios W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, 1099-MISC) de todos sus empleadores
  • Estados bancarios de intereses y dividendos (Formularios 1099)
  • Todos los formularios 1095, Health Insurance Statements (Declaración del Mercado de Seguros Médicos)
  • Certificado de Exención de Cobertura Médica, si lo recibió
  • Copia de la declaración federal y estatal del año anterior, si las tiene
  • Comprobante de número de tránsito bancario y número de cuenta para depósito directo tal como un cheque en blanco
  • Para presentar la declaración  de impuestos conjunt aelectrónicamente, ambos cónyuges deben estar presentes para firmar los formularios necesarios
  • Monto total pagado a proveedores de cuidados en guarderías y el número de identificación tributaria del proveedor (tal como el número de Seguro Social del proveedor o el número de Identificación de Empleador del negocio)
  • Formularios 1095-A, B o C, documentos relacionados con el Cuidado de Salud a Bajo Precio
  • Copias de transcripciones de ingreso de parte del IRS y estatales, si tiene alguna
